MUNCIE, Ind. (The CI) - The Muncie Crisis Center is ceasing operations.
According to a report from Rick Yencer with The Muncie Post-Democrat, the center, ran by Meridian Health Services, opened its doors on May 20, 2025.
On April 15 this year, the City of Muncie posted on Facebook that it would provide use of the center under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to Muncie Mission Ministries, with “…a long-term transition plan, allowing the Muncie Mission to assume ownership of the facility in 2027[.]”
Stephanie Wiechmann of Indiana Public Radio (IPR), which is owned by Ball State University, reports Muncie Mayor Dan Ridenour said “the transition will begin in January 2027, after the current contract with Meridian expires.” The CI is unable to independently confirm if the contract with Meridian was set to expire in January 2027.
Muncie Mission, according to its 2024 IRS Form 990 filing, describes itself as “a faith based agency that provides compassionate services on an immediate and/or long-term basis to the homeless and very poor of East Central Indiana.” The organization already has its own clinic available by appointment at its residential campus, according to its website.
Ridenour called the MoU with Muncie Mission “a win for the entire Muncie community.”
“By working together with the Muncie Mission, we are expanding access to critical healthcare services for those who need it most while making thoughtful use of City resources,” Ridenour’s statement continued. “This is exactly the kind of collaboration that helps move Muncie forward.”
Now, the City of Muncie posted to Facebook that they had “just been informed that the Crisis Center will cease operations effective July 3, 2026.”
The City recommends those receiving services to contact Meridian.
“We understand this news may be concerning for individuals and families who rely on these services,” the post continued. “The City is working to gather additional information and will share updates as they become available.”
The CI has filed an APRA request with the City of Muncie for any agreements made between the City of Muncie, Meridian and Muncie Mission, as well as any relevant emails and phone records between them this afternoon.
